History:
basic history here. adding on to his past...

“Once upon a time, there was a war with a race of alien giants called Zentradis. Having experienced the threat of destruction from their first contact with a ET, humanity entrusted its future to expansion into outer space, and set sail for new lands all across the galaxy. And in 2059, the 27th vast colony fleet to be created, Macross Frontier, was continuing its journey toward the center of the galaxy.”

Thus starts the story of boy in the Macross Frontier who wanted to fly.

Saotome Alto was born into the prestigious family of the Saotome, a Kabuki household. Now anyone who knows anything about the ancient Japanese theater, Kabuki, is that, it’s a family business. The only people that can act in a Kabuki are the men of the Saotome household and the male apprentices that disciple themselves to the troupe. Which means if you’re a male that’s born into a kabuki family, you will be a kabuki actor, no questions asked. To Alto, the words, “We lived through the war. It was by the power of the culture that human beings have. The core of culture is kabuki, thus we must spread and carry it on to the ends of the galaxy,” were his lullaby. It was those words he was raised up with.

And that is how Alto grew up. Saotome Alto was to be a kabuki actor and the next to inherit the Musashi-ya name. It was just like how people knew they had to breathe to live. Ever since he was wee babby Alto was trained by his father to eat, live, and breathe acting. One of his youngest memories was being told to read Shakespeare, Stanislavsky, Beckett, Aristotle and other writings by 3 days and recite to his father what the meaning of all the books were. Until then he wasn’t allowed out of the warehouse. It was a natural occurrence for his father to throw him or a fan at him (never hitting his face of course. the face was an actor’s living) whenever young Alto messed up. It might be considered child abuse to some, but this was teaching and discipline in the Saotome family. His father ruled the household with an iron grip, grinding into Alto the concept that “acting was living”.

This might be the reason why Alto became so close to his mother. His mother was nothing like his stern, scary father. She was soft, and gentle. She loved him with all she had. Alto’s mother was a sickly person, and she knew would not live to see her son grow into a man. Therefore, she gave him as much love as she could for his lifetime. It can be assumed that Alto is a mother’s boy, with him always carrying his mother’s good luck charm around his neck, and the fact that when he sees one of his love interests wearing his mother’s kimono, he sees her as his mother for a moment.

Another major thing he was taught to be as a child was to become a woman. Alto was an oyama, a kabuki actor that played the role of a female. Thus, he was raised to depict the perfect epitome of a “woman”. The “perfect woman” was someone who was the perfect housewife and the perfect prostitute at the same time. A mix between a saintly and a sinful female. He was raised to have all the skills needed to be a housewife, to be a woman. Every practice he altered his movement to become a woman, he wore a girl’s kimono, stuck an ornamental hairpin in his hair, went to the women’s toilet, and held a doll while sleeping. There was no shred of “male” in Saotome Alto’s childhood.

Alto debuted on stage at the age of 10, and immediately become known as “the genius young oyama”. At 12, he played the lead in Sakura-Hime Azuma Bunshou, in which his acting was considered legendary and gathered fans from other galaxies. His future as the next head of the Saotome troupe was set.

However, while he was still young (presumed to be when he was 13 or 14 years old) his mother had passed away, leaving Alto with only his strict father, the caretakers, and the numerous disciples of the Saotome troupe. While they all treated Alto with respect and care, it was still not the same for him. He was lonely. He had no friends of the same age, all that came close was for the Saotome name. Nobody looked at him as Alto, but only as Saotome Alto, the future head. Life just became a routine of acting, practice, dancing, and training. He felt stifled, and soon he became to hate the life he lived. He hated his family that only cared for acting, he hated his blood lineage that tied him down, he hated only being seen as a female, he hated acting as someone else, he hated the Macross Frontier with its roof, and most of all he hated his father that did nothing and just continued practicing his act even when his mother had died. All the love and ambition he had for acting, became a hate and trauma for him.

It was during this period when he was about to graduate middle school, when he stumbled upon the Space Flight Studies of Mihoshi Academy. After a fight with his future best friend, he ends up flying in an Ex-Gear as a bet. An Ex-Gear in short are powered-suit that traces the wearer’s movements and combined with its engine and wings, it allows the wearer to glide through the air like they have wings. Ex-Gears are known to be hard to pilot as they distribute several times the power with just minimal movement, making the bet practically a set-up for Alto to lose. But lo-and-behold, he manages to fly in the sky (wearing a dress since he was practicing for Romeo and Juliet fft). There he remembered how much he loved flying, and his mother’s words about a real sky. A sky with no bounds, that had no roof or end.

His love for flying became greater each day, enough to the point that he transferred from the Entertainment course to the Space Flight Studies as soon as he entered high school without a word to his family. Upon on being accepted, he told his father that he was no longer going to act, but become a pilot. This of course, started a row between the two, and ended up in Alto leaving the house and his father disowning him. But that was no matter to Alto, as he moved to an apartment and beginning to live a life of his own. To do what he truly wished to do. He finally had the first step to true freedom. The rest would come when he could burst out of the 6,000 feet sky, and fly as high as he wanted without any restraints.

The opportunity for the next step towards a sky was when he became a second year at Mihoshi Academy. By then, Alto was the second in his class and part of the trio that was known to fly most skillfully. Several students were to do an acrobatic performance during the live of the Galaxy Fairy, Songstress Sheryl Nome. There, Alto met two girls that would change his life forever.

The first was Ranka Lee, a girl of his age that longed to be a singer. She was someone who made the “male” in Alto want to protect her at all costs. She was someone that was like a sister and a love interest at the same time. He was often soothed by her presence and her singing, and he was the one that encouraged her to take a step forward and debut later on.

The second was the famed Sheryl Nome, a girl of his age that was the top of the galaxy. Everyone knew her name, and her songs. Although at first Alto had no interest in her and only thought of her as a selfish, queen-type girl that was only famous for her looks. But as he got to know her through series of events, he found out that she was just a normal girl too. Still queen-type and all, but nice at heart and a hard worker. Singing was her life, as flying (and acting previously) was his. She was someone who made the “male” in him become...well a male. (If you know what I mean...) Although he often bickers and fight with her, she stimulates his pride as a pilot and at times, a fellow entertainer, and in front of her, Alto feels free to say anything he wants.

On the same day he met these two, there were two incidents that also changed his life forever.

One was the attack of the Vajras, an unknown space bug that was thought to be a bioweapon of some sorts. It was this that allowed Alto to pilot an unmanned Valkyrie (VF-25 Messiah), a variable fighter that transforms in to three forms: a humanoid giant robot called Battroid, an in between type of a plane and a Battroid called Gerwalk , and the normal plane type called the Fighter, to save Ranka from the Vajras.

This leads to the other incident, him finding out about the SMS (Strategic Military Services), a Private Military Provider in the form of security group for transportation corporation. They were basically ex-soldiers and pilots that don’t fit in to the military or dislike it. Alto finds out his two best friends, Michael Blan and Luca Angeloni are pilots in the SMS. After a taste of the Valkyries and knowing the existence of Vajras, Alto decides to join as well. First for the reason of wanting to fly in a sky with no roof, though it may be a battlefield. But as the series goes on, he begins to wish to be able to protect his friends, and the Macross Frontier fleet.

After Michel’s death and the separation from SMS, Alto joins the military (U.N. Spacy) and he becomes the squad leader, despite his short history as a fighter pilot. This was because the fleet was low on people that had actually gone to the battlefield. There, he threw himself into work, not wanting to focus on the deaths and separations. He was known as the Demon Instructor for his drill sergeant ways of teaching the people of his squad. During these days, he would hate to have idle, down time and would try to find something to do.

He had detested the Vajra when the last battle for the planet of Vajra began, especially when the member of his squad had died. But after the realization that the Vajra was controlled by someone else, he had come to at least forgive it, and thank for its help on protecting the fleet in the end.

Through relationships with Ranka and Sheryl, and the people of SMS, Alto learns to mature and to care about the Macross Frontier. To love people again. He realizes he is no longer a child that blamed all his sufferings on his blood lineage and environment, but that if he doesn’t fight for it, nothing will change.

Appearance:

Most people aren’t able to tell if Alto’s a male or a female at a glance, and he would often point to his Adam’s Apple with a death glare. You would think he would cut his hair after all that, but it seems he keeps that hairstyle. Alto often likes to wear things all loose and baggy because he thinks that’s the ~*~guy~*~ style. He also has his mother’s charm around his neck all the time, and Sheryl’s earring on him.

Personality:

Tsundere.

….okay, there’s more than that.

"I.... am a man....but....but, I.... I .... they only see value in the women I act as... so... do you. … For a man.... To be shaped as the ideal for a man's sex, to be looked everyday with eyes filled with lust....! For acting, for beauty, for my path.... what about it! I ... a man....!"

Alto is a boy that wants to be seen as his true gender. Being raised and treated as a complete female has left a scar on him. He wants nothing more than to prove himself as a “male”, going as far to acting what he thinks a normal male would do. The words feminine and him being related to it are something he utterly hates hearing. Although some of his “manliness” is forced, he always seems to have had the personality and the moral codes of a man of the past. In his mind men must always protect the women and they do not show weaknesses in front of people. However, as the novel says “Alto, who was raised as a girl, the manners of a woman was part of his nature. Normally, his thought that he must be a man had covered that.” So, when he has completely relaxed or lets his guard down completely, the aura around him changes to become more of a feminine one. Enough to confuse the people around him with Alto trying.

"But you can’t throw away your past completely. Isn’t that why you feel pain?”

Although he denies acting, he can’t refuse it completely. He’s an entertainer to the bone, and when challenged as one, he can’t help but to take the challenge. Alto doesn’t say it, but he enjoys spotlight, and there’s an exhibitionist streak in him. He has high standards for entertainment and a good eye for it. After all, he loved the world of acting. It was his pride. And at the same time, he always fears that the Alto he is now isn’t his true self. That he’s lost himself in his acting. He’s someone who can’t really choose a side; that can’t completely refuse and hate something. Alto is easily swept by events, believing that this was a path he chose, and then awhile later doubting on his choice. That indecisiveness is one of his biggest downsides that keeps him from firmly believing his path for a long time.

’I don’t have talent like Michel. I’m not a cyborg like Brera, nor do I have experience like Ozma.’ Then it was practice. If he couldn’t catch up after practicing a thousand times, then he’ll do it a million times.

Alto is a hard-working, serious, and responsible. He believes that practice makes perfect, and if it’s to attain something he wants, then he won’t hesitate on practicing longer and harder than anyone else. He has a low tolerance for the selfish and those who fool around. He has high pride and self-confidence, but this is only because he knows subconsciously that he has skill to back it up. Alto actually it thought to have a short temper, and he’s more often seen with a frown on a face rather than a smile. However, for his short temper, he can also view himself in third-person and evaluate the situation with a calm eye. It’s just certain triggers and him not being able to always be so honest with his feelings that makes him look he’s impatient at times.

To avert his eyes from the truth wasn’t manly as a Japanese male should be. Therefore, even if it didn’t please him, he agreed. Saotome Alto was a fastidious boy like that.

As the novel states, he has a sense of fastidiousness. Alto firmly believes that he should only date seriously and not fool around. The topic of love is something he is seriously behind on. And just the mention of sex causes him to blush bright red. He likes to keep clean and orderly, with high moral standards. He dislikes to lie or go back on his words. Due to this personality, at times he looks down on some people. But when proven wrong, he accepts that he was wrong and apologizes when needed to. He’s very sportsmanlike in that sense.

It was warm, not his temperature, but his heart. ...Saotome Alto was a being that should exist in peace. … The garden of carnage didn’t fit him.

For all his sharp words at times and high standards, in the end, Alto is a kind boy. He was raised with love from his mother, and although it didn’t reach Alto, his father as well. The things he makes are always filled with care for others. From a sense of embarrassment or something, he’s often not able to be honest with his feelings. Yet, the people around Alto always knows that he’s someone that is honest and straight. He doesn’t like harming others and seeing other’s deaths is the last thing he wants. Alto is often told that he is more fitting to the peaceful and beautiful world of the stage.

”Yeah, blue and endlessly going.... a real sky that a swan flies in. It felt like a fairy tale. To me who was born on this ship. ...That’s why I wanted to fly in a real sky.”

When asked why he threw away his promised future as an actor, the simple answer was “I wanted to fly in a real sky.” He wishes to be freed from the cage of his father, his blood, and the ship. Even if it doesn’t fit him, Alto would rather reach for the dream he wants to rather than walk the path of peace. His strong will for that simple purpose is what starts his whole adventures in the series, and he keeps that dream until the very end. The determination in him is quite big, and whatever happens, he doesn’t give up. No matter what other people say or think, he tries to do what his heart tells him to do.

”That’s why we protect other people’s precious person. That’s the job of a pilot. We fly so that we don’t let others flow the tears we’ve flowed.”

As a soldier and a fighter, he eventually develops the feeling that he genuinely wants to protect and save other people’s lives. That’s why he does everything in his power to make that happen. Even if others call him a demon instructor for his harsh words to others, he does it because he wants to save as many lives as possible, including his subordinates. Alto doesn’t mind playing the bad guy at times, and will tackle on any cold looks. For the sake of protecting the people as a soldier, and for the sake of bringing his subordinates back alive as a leader.

Even if a friend visits suddenly, Alto may frown upon it, but he would never turn them away. He was a kind-hearted boy like that.

Alto’s relationship with people starts out as rocky. He dislikes people in general and he doesn’t trust others easily. He likes to be alone rather than with a group. But, as time passes, he realizes that friends are truly valuable people. And he thanks them for being with him. Alto is someone who’s very loyal and kind to those he cares about, and would do anything to protect them. And when they ask him to do something, he can’t say no, no matter how much he complains at first. Especially when they’re female, as he’s quite a feminist. To his comrades, he would charge into the middle of an enemy ground to rescue them and at times cover up the mistakes of a subordinate so that they are not punished severely. He always does all he can for people that he is close to.

He’s learnt this through his relationships and time on the Macross Frontier. Although he started out as someone who would rather be alone, he realizes that, people can’t live without others. He understands that people everywhere support each other. And that even though they were clashes and separations, relationships were beautiful like that because they had such bitter experiences.

”People, are always just themselves! No matter where they go, no matter how far they fly! I can’t be somebody, and somebody can’t be me! And, that’s all right! I am me! Whether I am a man, or a woman, that isn’t the problem! Saotome Alto here loves someone! That’s all there is to it! That’s why we can love others!”

Abilites:

Whilst Alto is a normal human being, he was born with talents. At the same time he is a hard worker, and while the word genius if often attributed to him, it was probably something he worked for and earned it.

His lifestyle and his skills as a pilot are all based on the foundation of acting and kabuki. As a pilot, he was able to learn how to fly perfectly fine in just three months and become one of the main fighters for the SMS. He is especially known to be able to read the winds well. As the book explains “he does not see, he feels. There is no up or down, right or left.” This allows Alto to dodge many of the attacks, and become the ace of the SMS. Although at first he is an amateur in the world of piloting, with time he grows, or is forced to grow, as a skilled pilot. While his aiming and martial arts skills aren’t as top class, his flying skills are.

As for acting, he was born to act. He walks with a purpose, he can charm a man or woman, and has an air of charisma. If he feels like it, he can turn a shabby old shelter into a marvelous stage with just a switch of his mindset. His acting at times, is so well-done that you wouldn’t even realize he is acting in the first place. He becomes the person. A little too much, if you ask Alto. He was afraid of losing himself in all the acting he did, and that was one of the reasons he fears it.

Other things he is good at are making paper airplanes. He just about can make them anywhere and out of anything as long as it’s paper. Plus, he knows how to do all household chores, and is known to cook very well. Alto is also considered a smart person, seeing that he was able to take second in his class after moving to the most-hardest course of the Mihoshi Academy from the more “lax” Entertainment Course.

Third Person:

Honestly put, school was pretty much a bore for Alto. The level of education that was taught in Holly Heights wasn’t as hard as his pilot studies course back in Mihoshi Academy. Aceing through was easy, and perhaps if he asked the correct people he could just skip a grade or two. But, Alto knew that learning educational material wasn’t the only reason why school was valuable. It was bonding with people that gave an experience that wasn’t possible anywhere else. He knew that especially after the war he had gone through.

That was why Alto liked to stay with the people his own age, in this grade. Besides, it could be considered as review for him so that he didn’t forget school material, after all he hadn’t gone in a long time at home. But, you couldn’t blame him that his mind often wandered during class. Especially on a nice day like this.

As the time was nearing lunch, he thought of food to eat. He’d brought a lunch box of his own, but Alto thought maybe going to eat after school at one of the cafes might be nice. He was still a growing boy after all, and a little calorie intake was acceptable, right?
